04.30.13 SGS Acquires MSi Testing & Engineering, Inc.

Columbia West Capital is pleased to announce the acquisition of MSi Testing & Engineering, Inc., (MSi), based in Melrose Park, Illinois, by SGS SA of Geneva, Switzerland.

As the leading laboratory in the fields of metallurgical testing and failure analysis, MSI participates in every stage of the manufacturing process, validating raw materials, solving production related problems, assessing finished and semi-finished goods, analyzing product failures as well as providing high end metallurgical engineering services.  Established in 1985, MSi primarily serves companies in the steel, aerospace, and industrial sectors.  As one of the largest remaining independent testing labs in the country, MSi's 43 highly-skilled staff includes an industry-leading number of Ph.Ds.

Columbia West Capital served as the exclusive financial advisor to MSi during this sale process.  "John Farr, David Barnett, and their team did a great job," said MSi President Mitch Jacobs. "We had some very specific goals for our auction process in addition to price, including a high level of discretion and finding a buyer with the right corporate culture.  Our process took a number of turns and CWC was invaluable in helping us to navigate those hurdles and ultimately finding a buyer that I sincerely look forward to working with in the future."

Chris Kirk, CEO of SGS said "I am very pleased with the acquisition of MSi. After the recent acquisition of Ludwig in Canada, SGS is now well positioned to further grow its Industrial Services across North America."  SGS is the world's leading inspection, verification, testing, and certification company.  Recognized as the global benchmark for quality, SGS employs more than 64,000 people in 1,250 offices around the globe. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
